Tyrann Mathieu, Jordan Jefferson Among Ex-LSU Tigers Arrested on Drug Charges

Jordan Jefferson, Tyrann Mathieu, Karnell Hatcher and Derrick Bryant were reportedly arrested Thursday on drug-related charges.

The news regarding the former LSU Tigers football players comes from WAFB.com:

WAFB's Jim Shannon and Kiran Chawla first reported the arrests at 5pm Thursday, quoting law enforcement sources.

Mathieu and Jefferson were charged with Simple Possession of Marijuana, Hatcher was charged with 2nd Offense Simple Possession of Marijuana and Bryant was charged with Possession With Intent to Distribute Marijuana, Baton Rouge police later confirmed. All four men will be booked into to the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.

The player sure to be impacted most from this newest development is Mathieu.

After finishing the 2011 season as a Heisman finalist, the Honey Badger's stock was at an all-time high. He was seen as a potential first-round pick in the 2013 NFL draft, had limitless potential and talent and still had another season to improve on his play-making ways.

But then 2012 happened.


Mathieu was removed from the team after failing a drug test and abusing the substance abuse policy. Still though, he enrolled back at LSU and intended to join the team next season.

But as the off-the-field incidents pile up, it's hard to imagine the dynamic defensive back finding a way back onto the squad, let alone convincing an NFL team not to let his stock plummet.

As for the others, the impact isn't nearly as crucial, but this is hardly a path they want to go down.

Jefferson, the former LSU quarterback, signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after going undrafted but was waived days later. He is now a part of the CFL's Montreal Alouettes' practice squad.

Hatcher and Bryant weren't quite talented enough to play at the next level, but it's still unfortunate to see them have run-ins with the law.

This serves as yet another all-too-frequent reminder of the trouble players often face outside of the world of sports.

It's a stupid law, held in place because of propaganda from big tobacco, alcohol, drug companies and others who have a vested interest in its criminalization.

It's 2012 for God's sakes. Frick, some states have legalization on the ballot in November.
