    And the bans begin

On Wednesday, 9 athletes were banned for drug violations, disqualifying them from Olympic competition.
    3 from Russia
    2 from Ukraine
1 each from Bulgaria, Morocco, Greece and Turkey

The Greek one was curious. The athlete tested positive for a drug that disqualified sprinter Ben Johnson years ago and is very easily detected. His father, who is his coach, is also the technical director of the Greek sports federation. He wrote a very eloquent letter saying that they would not contest the elimination from the Olympics, but raised the question of how his son could have tested positive for such an obvious drug. The young man was world champion in the high jump last year.

"The paradox of the use of such an easily detectible banned substance by a recent world champion who is under the microscope of doping control authorities, and on the eve of the Olympic Games, is blatantly obvious," Kyriakos Chondrokoukis wrote in the letter. "Against this paradox I will fight, we will fight, to answer and determine what exactly happened."

That, or there was some error at the testing lab. His father says they are planning to have the samples re-tested by an independent lab.

I think they were a little heavy handed with the Greek track athlete that got left out because of a Twitter "tweet" about Africans being in Greece and how at least W. Nile mosquitoes will have home food.

I can understand blatantly racist comments or PED positive tests being a reason to boot someone, but have a few friends from Africa that are white and people in Egypt aren't black as a majority.

Basically, she said, "So many Africans in Greece at least West Nile mosquitoes will eat homemade food"

SubR, this comment would have been more appropriate in the thread that is actually discussing that topic.
