    Maryland dropping 7 athletic programs

This is a sad story for sure. I'm not a Maryland fan, but I can only feel for the athletes and coaches. It is becoming a more common thing these days and it shows how when your top programs are unable to help the athletic department make a profit then these sports get cut.

I didn't know aerobics and tumbling was a sport.

7 sports and only 131 participants.
Sure, it's hard on those active in the eliminated sports, but if budgeting has to be done, then it's best to eliminate an underutilized area. UMd is at least taking steps to reduce deficits, especially the part brought on with the payout to Ralph. Somehow I think we're going to start seeing many other colleges facing the budget crunch and cutting areas which have minimal athletic participation. So perhaps Maryland is on the leading edge of college athletics?

It has happened at other schools. I think Maryland is just the first high profile school to make this change. We will see what other universities have to make this decision
