Carroll Shelby, the father of the original Cobra's and the Shelby Mustangs has died at 89 years of age. Most people know him for the cars he created over the last 50 years, but he was one of the world's best race drivers in the 1950's winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans for Aston Martin in 1959.

A heart condition caused him to give up racing in 1960 (doctor's at that time said he would only live a few more years) and he received a heart transplant in 1990 and still drove the Dodge Viper pace car (a car he helped design) at the 1991 Indy 500.
