    Say Aggies...

    What's this all about?

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) Texas A&M president R. Bowen Loftin says he and Bill Byrne are in talks regarding the end of Byrne's tenure as the school's athletic director.

University spokesman Jason Cook says ''president Loftin confirmed earlier (Friday) that he and Bill Byrne have been in discussions regarding a mutually agreeable transition.''

Byrne's contract ends Aug. 31, 2013. Loftin hasn't yet worked out the details or timing of when a change will occur.

Byrne was hired at Texas A&M in Dec. 2002. The Aggies are moving from the Big 12 Conference to the Southeastern Conference on July 1.

Loftin's comments were first reported by the Dallas Morning News and San Antonio Express News.

I don't think any of us are really sure. We think it may have something to do with the the handling of Sherman, and the AD employee calling Loftin a "putz". Whatever it is a lot of us are kind of glad. Byrne seems to care more about making the non revenue sports championship contenders than the revenue sports. Frankly he should have been fired after Sherman was hired. 3 days after Fran resigned Sherman was hired. Not to long ago we found out it was because he is a packers fan and hiring a former packers coach was a "big deal" for him.

    Re: Say Aggies...

$Bill was gone the day Dr. Loftin announced A&M's departure for the SEC.

As country_ag stated above, there was a loss of control within the athletic department in regards of respect for the University's leadership, both the President and the Board of Regents.

Also, Byrne was never behind nor enthusiastic about the move to the SEC. $Bill is a pacific coast guy at heart and wanted the Ags to stay in bed with the folks in Austin and head west eventually.

I agree with the point that $Bill has had no interest in supporting nor improving the so-called money making sports but rather has put an emphasis on building and improving all of the non-revenue producing sports; mainly this has been done in order to obtain a $ bonus as written in his contract and to inflate A&M's presence in the Learfield (now Sears I believe,) Sports Director's Cup.

Contrary to popular belief, Bryne has had little-to-no say in the hiring of A&M's head football coaches. He did not hire Fran-phony. He did not hire Sherman. And he did not hire Sumlin.

$Bill has, however, hurt A&M financially by giving extensions and pay increases to Fraud and Sherman in the past for illegitimate reasons.

Dr. Loftin must have some good reason(s) for allowing $Bill to bow out gracefully by not renewing his contract (although, by it becoming public knowledge maybe a little dig there?) but, truth be told, $Bill should have been fired some years ago.
