Chad Morris signs a new contract

Morris reaches agreement to stay at Clemson
    BY TRAVIS SAWCHIK

CLEMSON -- Clemson coach Dabo Swinney won an ACC title on Saturday and staff continuity on Sunday.

Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris agreed to a new contract with Clemson on Sunday, ending speculation Morris might be a one-season-and-done candidate at the school.

Even as a number of suitors, including Ohio State, expressed interest in speaking with Morris, Swinney said he never doubted he would be able to retain Morris.

"Chad will be here," Swinney said. "We're real excited about that."

Terms of Morris' new contract were not immediately available, but Morris will receive a significant enhancement over the four-year, $450,000 per-season contract he signed earlier this year.

Clemson athletic director Terry Don Phillips anticipated interest in Morris and had been working on a plan to keep the first-year coordinator since earlier in the season. Swinney said the deal had been in the works for several weeks.

"It was just a formality," Swinney said.

Morris' up-tempo, no-huddle offense has helped lead Clemson to a remarkable offensive turnaround from a season ago. Clemson ranked 88th in total offense last season (334.6 yards per game) and improved to 29th in total offense this season (440.62 ypg).

Perhaps more remarkable is Morris' own ascendance, rising from high school coach to an in-demand coaching commodity in three years. Morris was the offensive coordinator for one year at Tulsa, leading the Golden Hurricane to the nation's No. 5 offense in 2010.

Morris issued a statement in a release Saturday night.

"My wife Paula and our children, MacKenzie and Chandler, are very happy here," Morris said. "This is where we want to be. This is a place where people are passionate about football.

"I am excited about the future of this program. We have outstanding young players on this offense this year, and I know we have some outstanding student-athletes who will be joining the program next year. We have a bright future and we feel we will continue to be one of the most explosive offenses in the nation."

Reached by reporters after Clemson's ACC title win Saturday night, Morris said he was "committed" to Clemson but also said multiple schools had reached out to him.

"It is crazy right now," Morris said. "It's the time of year. ... Have there been people who have contacted me? Yes."

Of course, the good news doesn't stop with staff continuity for Swinney, who earned his own raise over the weekend.

With a conference title, Swinney's contract calls for his base compensation to increase from $1.75 million to the median pay of the top seven compensated ACC coaches, which is approximately $2.2 million.
Hearing it is 1.3 mill a year. :shake: That is ridiculous.

Re: Chad Morris signs a new contract

    I'm ok with it.

For one, if Clemson didn't give him a substantial raise, he would be gone. His roots are in Texas and the midwest and he will be getting HC offers if he hasn't already.

Two, he is the main reason Clemson went from 6-7 last year to 10-3 this year. We have pretty much the same coaches and players from last year and for whatever reason, our defense is worse this year, yet we have won 4 more games. And while his system is a part of it, he came to Clemson and immediately corrected obvious problems. He publicly acknowledges what the problems are and has a plan on how to fix them. More than any other coach on the Clemson staff, he has a standard for excellence and does what he can to make sure the players are reaching it.

If Clemson loses Morris, then all progress made this season will be wiped out

Does Clemson eventually boot Dabo in favor of Morris?

Dabo would have to have some really bad back-to-back seasons, but if that scenario came around, then Morris being HC is a high possibility.

AD doesn't have to look around...he's already being paid a decent amount, and you save money (barring buyouts) by booting the HC and hiring a new OC (that doesn't make $1 million+ a year).

I have to think that he is on some thin ice, especially after that comment he made about some Clemson fans. A large group of my friends graduated from Clemson and they were not too happy with what he said.

Administration can't do much more right now. They're still paying Bowden's buyout and increasing Swinney/Morris's salaries. Right now, their hands are tied.
