Oklahoma, Texas A&M may look at moving to SEC because of Texas' TV network

BIRMINGHAM—The continuing evolution of Texas’ place in the Big 12 will have far-reaching ramifications—including the most powerful conference in college football.

A source told Sporting News Wednesday that both Texas A&M and Oklahoma are so concerned about rival Texas gaining a recruiting advantage with the newly-formed Longhorn Network, the two institutions could turn to the SEC if the problems can’t be figured out. The core issue: The Longhorn Network will televise live high school football games in the state of Texas, an obvious recruiting advantage for Texas.

SEC commissioner Mike Slive said Wednesday that he will “continue to do what is in the best interest of the SEC.”

“It is my job to make sure the SEC is the premiere league,” Slive said. “For me to exclude any action that would preclude that from happening would be inappropriate.”

Texas A&M and Oklahoma were both in talks with the SEC last summer when Texas was contemplating a move to the Pac-10. The Big 12 eventually made it work in the 11th hour, in part, because of heavyweight Texas’ deal to pursue its own television network outside of the league coffers.

Now that the network will include televising high school games in the state of Texas, the dynamics of the Big 12 (and the SEC) could still change. Slive said that he is “comfortable” with the current 12-team SEC, and that it would take a “paradigm shift” for the SEC to expand.

Texas A&M and Oklahoma looking for a new home would be that kind of shift. Moreover, Slive said the SEC’s television deals with CBS and ESPN have clauses that allow them to renegotiate if the conference structure changes.

In other words, adding two teams wouldn’t mean the SEC is dividing the current revenue pie. It would mean, more than anything, completely restructured deals that would likely dwarf the $2 billion-plus the SEC receives from current CBS and ESPN deals.

I've been saying this all along. Make it happen, it will only make the SEC stronger.

Texas pretty much begged the rest of the Big 12 to stay and that this 10-team league would thrive. Then, Texas sends a big "F You" to the rest of the league.
Mathieu is a phenomenon – he makes more big plays per touch of the football than anyone I can remember. His first back-breaking play this game was a 92-yard punt return for a touchdown – his third TD of the season – that left this place as loud as it might ever have been during daylight hours.

“I could just hear Tiger Stadium rocking in my cleats,” Mathieu said.

I agree Texas begged everyone to stay and now it looks like they are trying to destroy the Big 12 or whatever it will be called which I don't understand. I'm surprised that Oklahoma is or could be in the mix to be in the SEC. I never would have guessed that but maybe I just have no idea what I'm talking about. As for A&M, doesn't the Texas legislature have a pretty good hold on them? Isn't it possible that they could force A&M to stick with Texas?

    Hmmmmm.

Doesn't Texas already have a huge recruiting advantage in their state, over A&M, TTech, TCU, Baylor, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, LSU, Arkansas, and nearly every other school in the mid south region.

Sorry, but I don't think recruiting advantage is the core issue...

Re: Oklahoma, Texas A&M may look at moving to SEC because of Texas' TV network

I think it's primarily jealousy on the part of the two schools. Both Oklahoma and A&M have the facilities and capabilities of competing with Texas consistently..........Oklahoma has done so.
A&M needs to take care of business that they haven't recently, much like Georgia hasn't in the SEC.

    Their complaints ring hollow..........

I stand by what I said in another thread. I do not want the SEC to change. It's fine the way it is.

devil Gimme all your money. Then gimme all your grandma's money...

There comes a point where a program can become overzealous in gathering funds and lose sight of everything else. Texas is at this point. They already had the most money of any college football program. Why do they greedily scratch for more?
