    SEC heisman Contenders for 2011?

    http://www.gatorsports.com/article/2...p=all&tc=pgall

In three of the past four years, an SEC player has been a winner of the Heisman Trophy despite not being mentioned as a serious candidate in the preseason.

Tim Tebow went from local hero to national icon in 2007. Mark Ingram wasn't on anybody's Heisman Watch in the 2009 preseason. And nobody knew what Auburn was getting in Cam Newton in 2010.

Here are five SEC players who could go from regional names to having their names etched on the stiff-armed one:

    Michael Dyer, Auburn
    Tyler Wilson, Arkansas
    Spencer Ware, LSU
    Chris Relf, Mississippi State
    Jeff Demps, Florida
Click the link to read about each one. I like that Relf is getting some preseason recognition. I just hope he keeps working hard this summer. The most important strides a team/ player makes is when the coach is not around.

The Hogs have been thinking Knile Davis, but Tyler Wilson for Heisman works okay too.

Relf plays all season like he did in the bowl and he'll be skeery good.

If Lattimore has another great year then you can add him there as well.

If those guys are on that list, where is Murray? Oh wait...gatorsports.com. Figured it out, still not over getting snubbed by him.

Marcus should definitely be on here, glaring oversight. Richardson, too.

Dyer, Lattimore, Murray, K Davis and Richardson are some other prime candidates.

I like that list much better.

I don't think Wilson belongs, but will next year. Relf definitely makes me scratch my head a little. I am not too sure about Demps either, but it is a Gator site and he probably does have the best chance on that team to be in the discussion.

Re: SEC heisman Contenders for 2011?

I think they are basing it off of what Demps was doing last year before he got hurt. I don't remember the exact numbers, so maybe they have exaggerated in my head, but it seemed like he was putting up around 150 total offensive yards a game before getting hurt. I don't see him being as much of a focal point but will get good numbers just won't have as many touches. I don't see him on the Heisman list at the end for the reason that even though he can chew up big chunks of yards per touch, he won't get the 10-12 touches a game at least that he'd need to get the overall numbers. Demps does average something like 8 or 9 yards a touch, though. I think he can be a top 15-20 player in the SEC but not a Heisman contender.

I don't think any of the players mentioned are contenders at this point. You have to think Luck is #1 right now.
