Gus Malzahn to AU as OC

    http://www.auburnundercover.com/news...o-auburn-as-oc

The official announcement is expected this afternoon.

Malzahn became an Arkansas coaching legend at Springdale High School, using his wide-open offense to build the state’s most dominant program.

In 2006, Malzahn took over as offensive coordinator at the University of Arkansas. Though the Razorbacks won their first eight games and made it to the SEC Championship Game, there was tension between Malzahn and former Razorback coach Houston Nutt.

Malzahn moved to Tulsa in 2007 and quickly developed one of the nation’s most prolific offenses, combining the spread with a variety of other formations.

In Malzahn’s first seaon, Tulsa led the nation in yards per game and became the first team in NCAA history to have a 5,000-yard passer and a 1,000-yard rusher in the same season. This season, Tulsa is second nationally with 565.1 yards per game going into the Jan. 6 GMAC Bowl against Ball State.

The Hurricane has rushed 610 times for 3,313 yards, an average of 254.8 yards per game, and has completed 255 of 397 passes for 4,033 yards, an average of 310.2 yards per game.

Tarrion Adams has rushed 228 times for 1,316 yards and 11 touchdowns. Quarterback David Johnson has completed 243-of-375 passes for 3,866 yards and 43 touchdowns. Seven receivers have caught at least 20 passes apiece.

With the end of the recruiting dead period a week away, Malzahn and James Willis is the only assistant coaches who have been confirmed as a staff members. Other than one radio interview, Chizik has not spoken with the media since he was introduced on Dec. 14.

Chizik spent most of his first week working to solidify recruits who had committed to Auburn. He presumably spent most of the past week working on his coaching staff.

He also has retained strength and conditioning coach Kevin Yoxall, director of football operations Jimmy Perry and director of NFL relations Phillip Lolley.

Former Auburn All-American Stacy Searels was offered the offensive line coach position but turned it down and said he would remain at Georgia.

Chizik has told those who have been retained that there will be other assistant coaches on the job Monday morning.

Numerous sources say Joe Whitt Jr., who finishes his season as Green Packers defensive quality control coach, will probably be one of them. But AuburnUndercover.com has been unable to confirm that. Whitt’s father spent 25 years as an Auburn assistant, is now a fundraiser for Tigers Unlimited and spent a week on the road helping Chizik recruit.

The younger Whitt was a walk-on Auburn wide receiver and an Auburn graduate assistant. He spent a year coaching receivers at The Citadel, three years as cornerbacks coach and recruiting coordinator at Louisville, a year as assistant defensive backs coach with the Atlanta Falcons and this season with the Packers.

At Auburn, Whitt became a national leader and advocate for student-athletes.

Several former Auburn players could be candidates to return to their alma mater. Among them are Ole Miss defensive line coach Tracy Rocker, South Alabama linebackers coach Kurt Crain, Troy wide receivers coach Shayne Wasden, Georgia assistant head coach Rodney Garner, and Mike Pelton, who was on Chizik’s Iowa State staff as defensive line coach. Former Auburn graduate assistant Jeff Koonz, who coached the secondary for Chizik at Iowa State, also could be a candidate.

Best news I've heard all year if it's true.

Wow, congrats. Malzahn has proven success as an OC in the SEC, including a very memorable 27-10 win in Auburn back in 2006 and a 7-2 conference record to boot.

This is not a good thing for the other 11 teams, especially bad for Ole Miss I would think.

good hire. with willis and lolley staying on, and now malzhon, the staff is beginning to take shape nicely.

i have to say, chizik is slowly getting my attention. may not be such a bad hire after all. i'm still pissed at jacobs for lying to me though.

New offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn, as well as head football coach Gene Chizik, have emphasized that running the football will be emphasized in spring training and in games this fall. Even if that is the case the Tigers will likely throw the football a lot in Malzahn’s system. His 2008 Tulsa team passed for 3,838 yards. In Auburn football history, the most passing yards in a single season is 3,282 in 1997. In 2007 at Tulsa, Malzahn’s offense produced 5,194 passing yards. - ITAT 3/17/09

Interesting hire. No McFadden or Jones in the backfield like he had in 06. Will be interesting in how he handles Burns who was showing signs of progress towards the end of the year.

I thought the spread was the problem, and Auburn wanted to go back to smashmouth football.
