Spurrier: This year's Florida team is better than 2006 title team
    By David Jones, Florida Today
GAINESVILLE How good is Florida, in the opinion of South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier?

Put it this way, Spurrier was watching Florida dismantle Vanderbilt 42-14 on Saturday night and got bored and changed channels so he could watch the Texas Tech game. In fact, Spurrier whose Gamecocks visit Gainesville on Saturday thinks this Gator team is better than the 2006 squad that won the national title.

"I would say Florida has a better team this year than they had two years ago that won the national championship," he said. "They're a stronger team, it appears right now, than two years ago. Two years ago you felt like you had a chance and a lot of teams had chances. Certainly Florida won the close ones two years ago that led them all the way through to the national championship. Now they are sort of blowing out people pretty regularly."

Spurrier's 1996 national title team at Florida is the only one in SEC history to win five straight conference games by 30 points or more. This Gator team fell just short of matching that accomplishment when the Commodores scored a late touchdown on Saturday.

"Certainly Florida is very strong running the ball, throwing the ball," Spurrier said. "Their offense has really played well recently here and their defense is very good, also."

On the other hand, he also feels this is the best team he's had in four years at South Carolina.

"It'll probably be two better teams than the two that played two years ago down there, in my opinion," Spurrier said.

It will be his second visit to Gainesville as an opposing coach. The first trip to Florida Field was a tense 17-16 loss in '06. He also has one win against the Gators, beating UF 30-22 in Columbia that cost his old team a shot at the SEC East title.

"That was a big win for the University of South Carolina because if was the first one since, what, 1939 that South Carolina had beaten Florida," Spurrier said. "That was why it was so special around here. So many old time Gamecocks said they didn't think they'd live to see the day that South Carolina beat Florida. But it's history now."

As for his own return "home," Spurrier tried to downplay bringing South Carolina to the place where he won the Heisman Trophy in 1966 and later the '96 national title.

"I think it's pretty old news," Spurrier said. "I don't think it will be a big deal. It will just be the Gamecocks against the Gators and I think we've won a few lately and they've won a few lately.. .. and go from there."

He did admit the stadium will always be "a special place for me."

"But when the game gets ready to go I'm still involved and really all of us coaches are involved in the play calling and all that," Spurrier said. "That's where my mind usually is all throughout a ballgame."

Florida has already clinched the East title and will play Alabama in the SEC Championship Game. But Gators coach Urban Meyer insists that playing against Spurrier will actually help keep his team focused.

"I think first of all, South Carolina is a very good team," Meyer said. "And then you have the built-in rivalry with coach Spurrier coming back to town. So I think you'll have a rivalry atmosphere around here. No. 1 because of the team, and second of all because of the atmosphere of coach coming back."

For anyone that's watched them both I think its fairly obvious UF is a better team this year than 2006.

Yeah, this is not a surprising thing to say. Defensively, the '06 squad might have been a bit better. Offensively, it's not even close. Florida is very stout. I think Alabama can challenge them because they are disciplined, they run the ball extremely well and they play tough defense. Still, it wouldn't shock me if UF is the favorite going into the SECCG (provided they win out)...

I think Florida will be favored by Vegas even if they drop a game between now and then.

Florida has only been a Vegas underdog once that I can think of since the BCS game against tOSU and that was at LSU in 07.

Re: Spurrier: This year's Florida team is better than 2006 title team

A few stats to feed the starving mind:

    Passing Offense:

    '07: 257.0 ypg, 32 TD's (38th nationally)
    '08: 208.8 ypg, 19 TD's (64th)

    Rushing Offense:

    '07: 200.15 ypg, 39 TD's (23rd)
    '08: 198.7 ypg, 26 TD's (22nd)

    Scoring Offense:

    '07: 42.5 ppg (3rd)
    '08: 42.8 ppg (7th)

The difference is in the defense......in '06, UF struggled scoring points, but had an awesome defense, and it was sufficient to lead them to the NC. In '07, they improved dramatically on offense, but their defense was weak, particularly against the pass. If their one-dimensional offense (Tebow) was ever contained, then they were pretty much guaranteed to lose the game.

This season, they are putting their offense of '07 together with a defense that better matches the '06 version than the '07 one. Which is why they are playing so well....

Georgia is very disapointing and Clemson is a joke. And, yes, Texas Tech, Texas or Oklahoma would murder Alabama. They would even give Florida a great game.

I'll wait to draw comparisons to 06' when the Gators have won something besides the east. That said, they look good right now. There is still a lot of football in front of them. They better stay focused, or this dream can end quick.

Old spur dog pulling a lou holtz perhaps?
