    Conference Power Rankings

There was plenty of optimism surrounding the WAC entering the season, and why not?

The league boasted a top Heisman Trophy candidate in Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan and America's Little Team That Could, BCS-killing Boise State. The coveted title of "Best Non-BCS Conference" looked like it could belong to the WAC, and the winner of the Hawaii-Boise State game in November would earn a BCS bowl berth.

Two weeks into the season, though, the WAC is far from the best non-BCS conference. In fact, if Hawaii had lost its 45-44 overtime thriller against fellow WAC-member Louisiana Tech, the conference's two marquee programs would have gone down on the same day. Boise State saw their nation's best 14-game winning streak come to an end in a 24-10 loss to Washington.

Running back Ian Johnson -- who, like Brennan, began the year with some Heisman hype -- rushed for 81 yards as the Broncos were held to their lowest point total in 18 games against a team that had not beaten a ranked foe since 2003. The Warriors needed a 49-yard field goal in the final two minutes to force the extra session.

Hawaii was unable to celebrate until Louisiana Tech failed on a two-point conversion in overtime. Brennan put up spectacular numbers once again, throwing for 548 yards and four touchdowns, but this was an opponent that won just three games last year and lost to Hawaii 61-17. Hawaii dropped from No. 20 to 24 in the AP poll after Saturday's narrow win.

Outside of the Big Two, the news is worse. As a league, the WAC is 0-10 against Division 1-A competition, including 0-3 against the Mountain West. Even the MAC has three wins over BCS conference teams to its credit.

Hawaii still has a chance to make this a special season and carry the WAC flag, but after two weeks, the conference is hurting.

That's exactly how I'd rank them right now. The Pac10 has the potential to be really good this year if teams like Washington and Oregon can continue to impress.

Yeah, the Pac-10 may be as good as the SEC this year. Time will tell.

Can't argue with that list at this point...The UW-tOSU game will say a lot about the strength of the Pac 10 this week (i.e. is it a 1a, 1b type situation with the SEC this year or is the SEC the clear #1).

I will say this, if you're a CUSA fan, you're probably claiming to be better then the ACC considering you are 2-0 against them this year.
