Alabama Re: Do we put Saban ahead of Bear Bryant now?

Rules were different in the old days. Bear and Bama got a championship from UPI at the end of the season because they were undefeated. They then lost their bowl game but bowl games did not count or did, depending on the sports writer.

Yes St. Nick is a better coach. Best coach I have ever seen in college football.
He has all the virtues I dislike and none of the vices I admire.

Re: Do we put Saban ahead of Bear Bryant now?

I think it is an answer that depends on your age. Coach Bryant was "one of us". He played for Alabama, and he came back to coach at Alabama because of loyalty. In this state, he was bigger than life. His persona was much more than football. His teams were made up of kids from across the state, primarily and he personified Alabama football. Saban is a great coach and like Coach Bryant a great recruiter, but he is not "one of us". Clarify the question. If you are asking "who is the best Alabama football coach of all time" then we can discuss that, but if you are still asking "Do we put Saban ahead of Bear Bryant now" then the answer from this old fart is NEVER!

I agree fully....and Saban has won all of his NCs on the field and not occasionally via the polls.

Plus, the compressed time period that Saban has won his five titles at Alabama, with the above mentioned scholarship limits, makes this run all the more remarkable.

Coach Bryant won one in 1966 that the Yankee Sportswriters gave to Notre Dame.

The 1966 title was denied Alabama due to politics. The University of Alabama football team was still segregated in 1966 and undefeated. It was a little too much for sports writer to vote for the 1965 national champion to repeat as national champion.

Nick Saban is the greatest cfb coach ever and will be until coach Hunter Renfrow takes the Bama job in 2030.

And the bias was against Alabama. Not for Alabama. There is no way in hell that Bama should not have been awarded the 1966 and 1977 National Championships.
