    Vicksburg, July 3, 1863

This day in history: On July 3, 1863, General Pemberton sent a note to General Grant regarding the possibility of negotiations for peace at the siege of Vicksburg. The Confederates surrendered the next day.

Grant was unable to take Vicksburg, despite several attempts. Then he laid siege and starved them. When women and children began to die from starvation and shelling, Pemberton surrendered the city.

General Pemberton was a native of New Jersey. He was called a traitor by may after the surrender.

The shelling was so intense that folks dug caves in the sides of hills. Every structure in the city was damaged.

As a side note, July the 4th wasn't celebrated in Vicksburg for 100 years after the surrender.

Two of my ancestors, Seaborne and Theodore Covington, of Covington, GA, fought there with the 34th GA infantry. Seaborne was killed in action on 4/14/1863. Theodore was captured and imprisoned at the Union death camp at Rock Island, Il.
Miraculously, he was one of the few that survived this death camp. Another Union atrocity that few today know about.

The victors are always left to write the histories. That being said, Andersonville was no picnic.
