Wouldn't this require a change of colors? And also... don't we already have this name covered in SEC West (Crimson Tide)??

Actually, that would be Nebraska or Iowa.
Dr. Charles E. Coates, Jr., a Dean at LSU and the school's first football coach, noticed in the late 1890s that his school, unlike many others at the time, did not have a ferocious animal as its mascot, as he said in a letter written in 1937 during a retrospective interview relating what actually happened several years AFTER LSU chose their colors and played their first game in 1893. He thought that LSU's colors of purple and gold resembled the face of a tiger closely enough to use as the team's mascot. It had nothing to do with the Civil War. People who later 'attributed' 'Tigers' to the civil war regiment were expressing an opinion, not fact. There is no written documentation at all that proclaims this as fact. It's total fabrication and opinion. The 'Louisiana Tigers' was actually the name of SEVERAL La. military outfits in the early 1800s that fought in the Battle of New Orleans and the Spanish-American War, among others. The LSU mascot was """"""NOT"""""" NAMED AFTER the 'Louisiana Tigers' military unit that fought in Manassas,Va., or any other La. Military unit, as some people ERRONEOUSLY claim or propose. It was coincidence, and people who have written this inconclusive opinion are just fantasizing. MUCH MUCH later, it was the 1955 'fourth-quarter ball club' that coined the moniker 'Fighting Tigers.' The word 'fighting' was not added until NINETEEN FIFTY FIVE

    No.

LSU's first football coach, Dr. Charles E. Coates, noticed a trend in the early-mid 1890s that other schools (mostly from the Northeast, where Coates was from) were naming their athletic teams' mascots after ferocious animals. Schools in the South, including LSU adopted this prevailing fad (Yale Bulldogs - Georgia/MSU) Princeton Tigers (LSU, Auburn), Harvard Crimson (Bama - though not an animal). In addition, Coates had chosen LSU's colors of Old Gold and Royal Purple in 1893, and did some aesthetic research to come up with a Tiger Head logo that lent itself very well to these colors, cementing the name to the Artist's Color Wheel complementary colors (yellow and purple.)
Several decades later, Coates penned a letter that was read at a reunion of those teams, detailing the above facts. Several decades after that, Louisiana author, journalist and sports historian Dan Hardesty stated the same in his books and columns. Hardesty also noted that 'anyone that somehow associated the "Tigers" nickname chosen by Coates in 1896 as having anything to do with a brigade of soldiers fighting in Manassas Virginia during the Civil War 3 decades before LSU started football was purely a falsehood.'
Furthermore, the word "Fighting" was not added to the LSU Tigers name until 1955 - after the 4th quarter ball club that fought til the end late in many of their games.

He also felt that a Tiger Head/Face lent itself well to LSU's complementary colors of Old Gold and Royal Purple (which he had chosen 3 years earlier.)
The word "Fighting" was not added to LSU's nickname until 1955, in honor of the fighting 4th quarter ball club of that year, that fought all the way to the end of many of their games.

Dan Hardesty, Louisiana author, journalist and sports historian, noted the above, plus he related a story about a team reunion in 1937 where Coates himself repeated how he chose the colors and team name. Hardesty also stated that Coates did not have any knowledge, nor did he associate with his team, a band of soldiers who fought 3 decades before he got to LSU in the Civil War in Manassas, Virginia, and nicknamed Louisiana tigers. He said there was no relation, and anyone who thought this was creating a falsehood.
