Mike doesn't eat everyone indiscriminately? I thought he didn't care who he had in his digestive system.

We have an Old English "A". Alabama copies the Atlanta Braves but we don't copy them.

Re: Mike, LSU mascot is racist

In 1896, LSU's first football coach, Charles E. Coates Jr., chose the name 'Tigers,' following on the then current infatuation with northeastern football teams (specifically Ivy League), that
were naming their teams after ferocious animals. Many southern teams modeled their names after some of them. e.g. Bulldogs (Yale), Crimson (Alabama - though not an animal)) Tigers
(Princeton). Coates also stated that he thought LSU's new colors (adopted soon before) of royal purple and old gold lent themselves aesthetically well to a growling tiger face, especially since
purple and gold (actually yellow) are complementary colors on the Artist's Color Wheel.

Those were the only 2 reasons "Tigers" was chosen as the mascot name. LSU's first live tiger mascot 'Shiek' was adopted in 1935, and re-named 'Mike I' after his trainer, LSU AD trainer Mike
    Chambers.

Several decades later, in the late 1930s, a letter Coates had written was featured in an LSU athletics gala event that repeated how his choice of 'Tigers' and the colors were chosen.

Louisiana author, journalist and sports historian Dan Hardesty (among others) has noted numerous times in publications and interviews of the above facts. Hardesty also acknowledged that there had been a regiment of Louisiana solders fighting in Virginia who were given a nickname of 'that fighting band of Louisiana tigers.' However, the inference by future writers and fans that Coates named the team after a group of soldiers 35 years in the past was patently false. That the school's mascot was a tiger was chosen by Coated because of it being a ferocious animal and nothing more.

Re: Mike, LSU mascot is racist

The name 'Tigers' was chosen by the first LSU football coach, Dr. Charles E. Coates Jr. At the time in the mid 1890s, Southern schools were following the northeastern schools' (in particular Ivy League) mantra of naming their athletic teams after theirs', including ferocious animals. Bulldogs (Yale), Crimson (Harvard), Princeton (Tigers). Coates also did some research on what a growling Tiger head would look like with LSU's recently chosen complementary color wheel colors of royal purple and gold gold, and he thought the colors would complement that visual well, so that was the second reason he chose 'Tigers.'
Dan Hardesty, Louisiana sports writer, journalist, author, and sports historian noted in the 1960s years later that other peoples' "opinion" that 'Tigers' was chosen because of the nickname of the brigade that fought over 3 decades before the name was chosen in Manassas, ostensibly from Louisiana (actually they were from all over and even foreigners) nicknamed the 'Fighting band of Louisiana Tigers' is total fabrication and patently false.
Coates, himself from the northeast, chose the colors in 1893 when the nearby LSU book store carried purple, green and gold ribbon (it was Mardi Gras time), and chose purple and gold, and chose the name Tigers 3 years later after a ferocious animal and because the hue of the complementary colors matched a ferocious tiger face.
In addition, the name "Fighting" was not added to "Tigers" until the mid 1950s to honor the 1955 '4th quarter ball club' that fought to the end in many close ball games that year.

Re: Mike, LSU mascot is racist

Dr. Charles E. Coates, Jr., a dean at LSU and the school’s first football coach, noticed in the mid-1890s that his school, unlike many others at the time, did not have a ferocious animal as its mascot, as he said related in an essay letter written in 1937. He thought that LSU’s colors, royal purple and old gold (that he helped choose 3 years earlier) resembled a growling tiger closely enough to go with the animal as the mascot.
LSU's men's and women's sports teams are called the Fighting Tigers, Tigers or Lady Tigers. LSU first adopted its "Tigers" nickname in the fall of 1896 after an undefeated football season.["Tigers" seemed a logical choice since most collegiate teams in that year bore the names of ferocious animals, like the Princeton University TIGERS. e.g. Yale "Bulldogs" - Georgia. When LSU football teams entered the gridiron battlefields in their fourth year of intercollegiate competition, they tagged themselves as the 'Tigers'.
Dan Hardesty, a Louisiana journalist, author and sports historian, wrote in the 1960s that the name evolved solely for those two reasons: (1) Coates, himself from the Northeast was following suit with the Ivy League by choosing 'Tigers', and (2) LSU's hues, complementary colors on an artist's color wheel - looked great on a growling tiger face.
Those who somehow linked the Louisiana regiment (actually they were from all over) who fought in Manassas 30 years before Coates and were dubbed 'that fighting band of tigers' were inaccurate.

It was the 1955 LSU 'fourth-quarter ball club' that helped the moniker 'Tigers' grow into the nickname, 'Fighting Tigers'
