LSU LSU just fired Dameyune Craig and re-assigned Jabbar Juluke

One day after National Signing Day, LSU announced two staff changes.

The Tigers have fired wide receivers coach Dameyune Craig and re-assigned running backs coach Jabbar Juluke to another position within the LSU athletic department.

"We appreciate the work that Dameyune and Jabbar did for LSU," Orgeron said in a statement. "We wish them nothing but success in the future."

Both coaches were the final pieces added to the coaching staff last February and their official hirings came one day apart.

Juluke was hired on Feb. 13 as the running backs coach and Craig was hired the following day as the wide receivers coach.

Craig came to LSU after spending 2013-15 with Auburn 2010-12 with Florida State as he cut his teeth in major college football.

Craig, a former Auburn quarterback, spent some time playing professionally before entering the college coaching ranks in 2004 as a graduate assistant with LSU. He spent one season with the Miami Dolphins staff in 2005 before spending two years at Tuskegee (2006-07) and South Alabama (2008-09).

There were rumors floating around in December that Craig was talking to Oregon about becoming the Ducks' offensive coordinator but nothing ever materialized.

So did LSU use these guys as a recruiters, with players being promised they were going to be coached by these guys, then turn around and fire them when they have the players name in ink?

Here's a little of what I'm hearing. Craig is headed to become the OC at Oregon where the OC was fired because of a drunk driving charge.

And Jaluke was in over his head.

    But this is just talk...

It's clearly a calculate move. Coach O knew that he was going to replace them but waited until the faxes came in...and he didn't even let the ink dry!

I've heard Mario Christobal, who was scheduled to be co-OC at Oregon, will get the job by himself.

OK, a little time has passed. I'm reading that this maybe recruiting related and perhaps Coach O and Canada want their own people on the offensive side of the staff.

LSU's recruiting class was a top 10 class. That's a good job considering that the head coach was named in December and no official visits were allowed during the interim stage. However, there were misses by the LSU staff and they are notable at RB and Receivers. That's the area of Craig and Jaluke. It's hard for me to imagine that LSU can't get the cream of the crop at RB. And next year, LSU is going to hard press for the RB position because of what happened this year and we better hope that Guise doesn't get injured this year. It does appear that Jaluke was in over his head. He was reassigned and not fired which is probably a good thing for him as it would take him a minute to find a new job. But I do look for him to be phased out of the athletic department. Craig was fired and he will be paid for this year by LSU but if he's hired by another program then there's a formula for this situation. LSU whiffed on their receiver targets and since we have a couple going to the NFL this year then we need to find 2 more than will head to the NFL in 3 years and we did not do that. Craig is good and will find a job somewhere and if not this year, then next year. And he's getting paid this year no matter what.

I also have to think that Matt Canada has something to do with this. When Coach O became the head coach, it wasn't done in the normal fashion. Normally, the HC forms his own staff that fits him and to his liking. But O already had a staff. But this makes 4 position coaches that he has taken off the football staff. But I suspect that Matt Canada had some kind of influence with what went down.

Coach O points his firing finger

There's a thin line between loyalty and objectivity.
Loyalty is a valued virtue, but it is also blinding when trying to make an objective decision.
In most businesses, management prefers to be surrounded by employees they've hired because they've vetted them, believe they know the strengths and weaknesses, and feel a two-way street of loyalty.
Staffers already on the job when a new boss shows up often sense it's just a matter of time before they are shown the door.
It doesn't matter if they're effective employees. If they don't demonstrate the proper enthusiasm of all decisions made by the new man or woman in charge, it just gives him or her the bullets to eventually fire them.
Apparently, LSU receivers coach Dameyune Craig and running backs coach Jabbar Juluke, both of whom had a hand in recruiting half of the Tigers' 23-man 2017 signing class announced Wednesday, somehow gave new head coach Ed Orgeron just enough ammo to dump them Thursday.

Craig was fired and Juluke has been re-assigned to a position within the athletic department, which could be anything from helping previous head coach Les Miles update his resume, to being on the search committee to find a new live mascot, to serving as a bodyguard for athletic director Joe "The Search" Alleva.

Accounts last season from LSU's receivers and running backs indicated both Craig and Juluke, who were hired last February by Miles, were well-received and well-respected.
On the recruiting front, Craig, a former Auburn quarterback, was responsible for seven signees in the Tigers' 2017 recruiting class, including two receivers, two defensive linemen both from Alabama and helping Juluke re-recruit quarterback Lowell Narcisse after he de-committed Dec. 12.
Juluke had a hand in five signees, including two running backs though he couldn't persuade five-star running back Cam Akers or four-star RB Travis Etienne to sign with the Tigers.
Craig should have no problem finding employment. Guess which rich-get-richer-school has a wide receivers coach vacancy?
Yes, it's Alabama. Tide coach Nick Saban could hire Craig and simultaneously stick the knife in both in-state rival Auburn and SEC West rival LSU.
So why did Orgeron jettison Craig and Juluke? Sources close to Coach O say it's nothing more than his desire to surround himself with his own hires because he apparently values loyalty above all else.
    But here's the problem.
Loyalty sometimes leads to obvious, tough decisions being ignored, which in Orgeron's case is his love and admiration for Pete Jenkins, LSU's 75-year-old defensive line coach.
There are few D-line coaches in college football that approach Jenkins' legendary status as a teacher of the game. Jenkins is Orgeron's mentor, his Obi-Wan Kenobi.
It's one of the reasons why Orgeron doesn't require Jenkins, who isn't designated as an off-campus recruiter, to fully participate in the mentally and physically exhausting recruiting process.
While it's true Jenkins did Orgeron a favor by agreeing to come out of semi-retirement and join the Tigers on an interim basis when Orgeron took over Sept. 26, not having all full-time assistants on the recruiting trail is a disadvantage.

Only the brilliance of Austin Thomas, LSU's 32-year old football staff general manager who received a waiver to replace Jenkins as a recruiter, saved the day for the Tigers on signing day.
Thomas helped recruit six signees, including being the primary recruiter who landed Murfreesboro (Tenn.) Oakland safety JaCoby Stevens, Nashville (Tenn.) East Nashville Magnet linebacker Jacob Phillips and Plaquemine safety Todd Harris.
That's well and good, but Thomas shouldn't be required to go way beyond his job description every year.
If Orgeron wants to keep up with the Sabans and the Urban Meyers of college football, loyalty needs to take a back seat in doing everything necessary to put his program in position to be successful.
So if that requires Orgeron making Jenkins a staff analyst that could still impart his decades of knowledge to the D-line from a desk job, so be it.
Because as first-semester freshman QB Narcisse tweeted upon learning of Craig's firing, "This world ain't nothing but a big business."
