    Direction of Think Tank

    Food for Thought:

    1. As a moderator I try not to censure The Think Tank; I think the purpose is to have candid discussions/debates... and so I think the quickest place to make this place "go away" would be to over moderate

    2. I also enjoy the candid discussions; any frustrations that might form are sitting on top of a greater appreciation for the fact that we can do this in our country. I have spent time in 30 (+/-) countries... and I can tell you that this type of situation in not "the norm" for almost anywhere in the world. Even in otherwise liberal countries... there is the (often legal) expectation that you shall not voice certain concerns, or certain dissents.

    3. I wasn't around The Tank 10 years ago, so my vantage is relatively narrow... but I believe that if there is less participation in here... it is at least partially just a result of how hyper-political these times are. I don't think there is a forum anywhere of political content that doesn't get "sharp" from time to time -- I can't imagine that it exists.

    4. Most forums are turning into complete echo-chambers, which is good for no one. Maybe it pads people from conflict, but is that what we really need? Go to Reddit and you will see 10 sub-forums that are for the same topic -- each will be moderated to where there is no exchange of ideas, only the echo of whatever idea the moderator sees fit (... and at times, whatever the Reddit CEO personally sees fit). What a joke...

Having said all of that -- and I know this is dragging on -- it isn't a good thing whenever long-time Fanatics feel the way Cuz & Elvis feel about visiting & posting in The Tank. "H" does his part to ensure that this doesn't become his personal echo chamber and I try my best to make sure it doesn't become mine, but a Top-down push isn't necessary to destroy this place... if we are simply willing to make it toxic on our own.

All that I believe this place needs is the awareness that emotions run higher today than in the past... and simple efforts to not carry frustrations longer than the debate that is right in front of you.

One thing that I need is feedback -- if this place needs to be moderated differently, then reach out and make a suggestion... and for my part, I'll do what I think is "right"... or even step down if it needs to be moderated in a way I'm not cool with. I also promise to have a seperate "moderator hat" than my "user hat" and not take personal action on anyone.

Last comment -- I hope the folks like Elvis & Cuz feel welcome... and I hope you know that if I grind on your position a little bit (... as I do), that it isn't personal and that I really don't carry it with me (... or I don't feel that I do).

Take this in -- shoot me some feedback (that doesn't involve a wikipage...)... and lets Make the Think Tank Great Again!!!

Thanks for such a thoughtful response -- I knew I can count on you!! But actually, I was asking for feedback for myself...

Other point of note: I'm now thinking censorship is back in play.

Cheap personal shot that deserves an infraction.........you make posts like this when you have nothing else to contribute.

A cheap personal shot has been in your sig for weeks. I have shown you where it is untrue, yet you keep it there, and I am not calling for an infraction of you.

Let me know how this goes Zou. I see it is off to a swell start.

I am pleased to see that you are not for censorship, unlike the current occupant of the WH.

    Re: Direction of Think Tank

I think The Tank should be lightly moderated. Even Orgcrush had insightful comments once you ignored his bluster and got him to discuss issues. Sadly, many good posters, are easily offended when they first encounter the combative style of many tank posters. I miss thoughtful posters such as USC90, Elvis, Crimson Pirate, Trav, Off the Porch, etc. Just keep on moderating as you are and perhaps Discussion will eventually improve here in the Tank.

    Yes -- impeccable start.

1st Response: Completely off topic & unhelpful

    2nd Response: Anger

3rd Response: Only on topic... because the thread is already hijacked... but unhelpful

    4th Response: Irony

I'd say its going swimmingly... and I appreciate the hard work & support!

You need to stop harassing him and remove that stupid sig. Consider this your final warning.

    Re: Direction of Think Tank

You know, part of the problem is simply that the activity at the forum overall has died off over the years. A lot of forums have had the same problem as people shift to other forms of online interaction.

So now the forum is down to about 20 regular posters, only a handful of which post in the tank; which means we are all waaaaaaay too familiar with each other at this point for any serious debate to happen. We assume we already know what each other's responses are going to be, so we've already ruled out what they say long before they say it.

We need a hard reset... but short of everyone changing their user name and none of is knowing who-is-who I don't know how to accomplish it.
