    2015 FIFA Women's World Cup

No one talking about the women's World Cup? the US, the top ranked team in the world, is up 1-0 against Nigeria right now in the 90th minute. If they can hang on, they will win the group of death (three top 25 teams in the group with Sweden, Australia and Nigeria) and play one of the four third place group finishers.

The US won their opener 3-0 against Australia, tied Sweden, and beat Nigeria (just went final) but have not looked like the best team in the world.

There is serious competition out there this year, Germany is very good, France is very good, Canada is a good squad playing at home, Brazil has probably the world's best player still in Marta, Sweden is a good team, etc..

The US women, while winning a bunch of Gold medals at Olympics and tournaments but have not won a World Cup since 1999 and are looking to send Abby Wambach, the leading international goal scorer in history, mens or womens (she scored the only US goal today) off into the sunset with her first WC win after the heartbreaking loss in 2011 against Japan, a game the US had in hand twice and let slip away and lost in penalties.
"Alabama's cornerbacks don't impress me one bit. They're overrated. Real men don't play zone defense and we'll show them a thing or two come January 1."

Miami WR Lamar Thomas, the weeks before the 1993 Sugar Bowl national title game.

They have done a TERRIBLE job of promoting it. To be honest, I stumbled onto some coverage earlier today and I hadn't even realized it had started. It's a shame because i really like watching the ladies play.

US has looked very bad so far. No offense against a below average Nigeria, especially when they went down to 10 players.

As a referee, I watch the quality of the officiating at major tournaments; the WWC has had some of the worst I've ever seen at the international level.

They are missing calls that I would get killed for on my assessments if I missed them. Many of these female refs are not ready for prime time.

Wambach is too old and Leroux isn't as talented as everone is led to believe. Only Morgan is capable of setting her own goals up, and they keep relying on the long lob and its just not working. They are blaming the turf, which may hurt some, but how they are attacking is still ineffective.

US up 2-0 against Columbia in the first round of the knockout stage, but Columbia has been playing with 10 women since the 47' mark and one of the goals was a PK by Carlie Lloyd.

Once again, the US will win but looking far from a dominant force. I still do not count us out against any team, but the US has yet to put together one great team effort. Alex Morgan is going to play the whole 90 minutes today, that's encouraging, meaning she is healthy (she had the first US goal).

Looks like the US will play China in the next knockout round.

Columbia was ranked 28th in the FIFA rankings, China is 16th.

And we lose Rapinoe and Holiday for the next game due to second yellow card. That will be tough to overcome.

Eh Holiday not so much, but yes on Rapinoe. Her creativity and ability to make moves in the middle of the pitch and creating chances is something the US desperately needs, and has to hope we can get a goal or two early and rely on our defense, which is the best in the world.

well, maybe with Rapinoe gone they'll actually try and play like a team.

I totally agree that the United States needs to play more team ball and get more of the team involved (especially on the wing going forward, getting Alex Morgan and Sydney Leroux involved more, not a Wambach-centric approach just lobbing balls from everywhere and hoping she can get position and head one in. She is old, she should only play as as second half sub, prob the best sub ever but still a sub), but Rapinoe has been the best US non-goalie so far IMO. Her and Carlie Lloyd have been the primary ball handlers and playmakers.

Re: 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup

Well, we saved our best performance for the best team, as the United States beats Germany today 2-0 to advance to the WC Final.

It was 0-0 when Germany missed a PK to take the lead, which is extraordinary because the Germans had never missed a PK in World Cup competition. Carli Lloyd scored first for the US, on a PK and she assisted on the second goal, when she placed an excellent ball for O'Hara to put in the net. The US played their best overall game today, and now there is only one more game, the winner of Japan (who broke the American hearts in 2011) and England. The US defense is the best in the world, and with players like Lloyd and Rapinoe being in attack mode, we have a good chance to win it all for the first time since 1999 and maybe exact some revenge from the Japanese.
