    ***World Cup Brazil***

First match was today. Brazil looked lackluster, but still ended up winning 3-1.

Terrible call on that penalty kick. Plays and calls like that on the biggest stage of them all is why soccer will never grow any bigger here in the US.

Yeah that call was BS.....But it was a 1-1 game, you are in the box and the match is in brazil so you take a dive and see what happens. They got the call and it cost Croatia points.

lol what? Like there are never bad calls in other sports. haha.

And if you don't think soccer is continuing to grow in this country then you are not paying attention.

It was bad. Calls like that will always happen because it's, for the most part, just one official who makes those calls int he box. If he doesn't see something (missed call) or has a bad angle (which I think happened today) then bad calls can happen. It's been a part of the sport for a long time. It actually adds to the drama. lol

But one call did not decide this game. Croatia needed Brazil to score for them, so it was, in the end, a just result. Brazil looked sluggish, but they were the better team. They need to get better before they play the likes of Spain, Germany, Italy and Argentina.

There's no other sport in the world that Americans go out of their way to tell you how much they hate it. Participation in the sport is growing, but that's mainly because people are beginning to fear having their kids play football. I'm not one of them. I love the game. But you're not going to bring in the fringe supporters with calls like that.

Not that it really matters. It's globally popular everywhere else, but it'll still never overtake the big 3 here stateside.

Nishimura-san just earned himself relegation to 4th official status for the rest of the WC after that display. IMO, the phantom Croatia foul against Julio Cesar late in the match at 2-1 was just as egregious. That was clearly a 50-50 ball and Julio Cesar was barely grazed. Referees are taught to protect the goalkeeper, but that was too much.

I'd like to say I wouldn't have made that call in any match I have refereed, but on that stage, I'd be feeling some serious pressure.

Lol, one call in the opening match of the world cup is not going to make or break fans on the fence. Exciting games make fans and there will be plenty of them. If people were on the fence for the first match, they will continue to watch the tournament. The US hasn't even played yet.

And your theory that soccer is getting popular because people fear for their kids playing football is just laughable.

2 more bad calls in the Mexico-Cameroon game as Mexico should have been up 2-0 at the half.

I have to argue that that call did cost them the game. It was 1-1 late in the 2nd half and Brazil had done nothing offensively to think they would score a goal and then they get the game handed to them
