Any SEC school calling out another for "thugs" is f'ing laughable. We're talking about testosterone filled 18-22yr old kids who have been turned into human wrecking balls, most of which are only in school to get their NFL degree. The top 2/3 of the league mostly recruit the same players. Spending a few years in Athens vs Columbia vs Baton Rouge vs Gainesville vs apparently even Nashville doesn't transform anyone into a thug. That mentality has existed within some of these guys for years and most likely will continue to for several years after their departure. I made some bone headed/hot tempered poor decisions in school too, thankfully I just didn't have hundreds of thousands of people watching me at the time.
"As Clemson's founder, Tillman seemed to represent the very 'white savage' that he described in his speeches. Volatile, uncouth, missing an eye, and clad in unfashionable clothes, Tillman was easily seen as the embodiment of the Southern "poor white," a man with hatred for "the negro" flowing in his veins. Tillman represented an ignorant, intolerant white South that had seized the reins of power from a more cautious elite that, whatever its faults, had sought peace through compromise and accommodation." - Stephen Kantrowitz, Ben Tillman and the Reconstruction of White Supremacy
And the difference here is that I won't be bashing other teams if they have players beating women!
"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America's debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the US Government can not pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government's reckless fiscal policies. Increasing America's debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that "the buck stops here." Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better."
- Sen. Barack Obama 2006

Football has gone soft. Dick Butkus used to say he was going to try to break so and so's bones all the time.
Check out this wonderful clean play by the LSU O-Line on Chas Sutton...gosh, those Columbia THUGS are just terrible.

Didn't forget...charges weren't pressed because it wasn't his gun, so the situations are in no way analogous. In contrast, Crowell (who was already suspended for failing multiple drug tests, mind you) was in sole possession and ownership of the gun.
I guess y'all forgot about half of UGA's defense being suspended for a portion of the year -- I wouldn't call any other team's defense "thugs" ....

On the two videos......
My last name is Collins, we claim La'el and Jalen as cousins, because, well, they play for LSU and have the last name Collins. The fact we are not of the same race, part of the state, etc means nothing. So anyway, Cousin La'el missed his block. I used a similiar move when I played ball, and I teach a similiar move, even at the pee wee level. It should go to the shoulder ideally, but...
Cousin La'el is a guard. It is a simple fact of football that play on the interior line is nasty and physical and shots like this are extremely common. Watch for them the next time you watch a football game. My favorite one in HS was a palm strike to the neck. My 10 year old also plays guard, and he has developed some way of getting inside their shoulder pads from the side when he is locked up blocking and twisting the skin. I have had parents on our team show me the bruises. Even knowing this, I can't catch him doing it, so the refs can't either. Also when he fires out of his block, he will use his hand that is not on the ground to basically open hand strike the defensive player below his shoulder pads. Goal being to knock the wind out of them and eventually make that spot sore. This is a VERY common technique at all levels of football. Froma DL POV there are ways to counter these moves. One of my favorites is to use a swim technique to grab hold of the back of the OL pads and spin him. Also, if the OL stays low and tries to block for the knees (which is legal at the point of contact, as are some blocks in the back) dropping an elbow into the kidney region is common. Punched to the kidney regions are also very common if a DT tries a spin move. Blitzing LBers are going to get punched, chop blocked, etc because that is the only way to counter their speed. Believe it or not, you don't have to teach these moves, they tend to figure them out and learn them form each other. Kids that play OG, C and DT or NT tend to be nasty little buggers to begin with. And if they keep playing those positions it tends to build up, because, well, because it allows them to block / get off a block, which keeps the QB and RB from getting killed and the coach yelling at them. You will not see this type of play from the OT and DE position because they operate in space and can be seen. Same as with holding, C and OG hold on almost every play and seldom get caught, OT is much more visible. So Cousin La'el needs to realize that in a spread formation with that big of splits, you can be seen. So the next time he makes the mistake of stepping right with a speed blitz coming to his left, he is going to need to be more discrete in his recovery.
Now, Quarles is a different story. He is stupid. Not only did he not wait for a pile / scrum to get his shot in, he punched the guy in the helmet. NEVER PUNCH A GUY IN THE HELMET. Helmets are hard, you can very easily hurt your hand. I blame a lack of coaching from his position coach for this obvious mental error.
Now, on the other video,
Basically what I am saying is that interior line play is a lot like pileups. There is a lot of nasty stuff going on in there, simply because it is hard for the refs to catch it. Every guy I know who has played
Yes, THAT damn cool.
