Some quick thoughts about quarterback Vad Lee’s decision to transfer after his first season starting at Georgia Tech.
Why?
He wasn’t working out as a fit within the offense. He was having trouble making the reads in the option, mastering the footwork and developing plays with quickness. Coach Paul Johnson in October said that Lee “can be his own worst enemy” for sometimes thinking too much as he made reads.
The very curious thing is that Lee had eight runs of 20 yards or more last season on 96 carries as a backup to Tevin Washington but only one this season on 182 carries.
What are his choices?
He has two years of eligibility remaining. If he goes to an FBS school, he will have to sit out one year before being able to compete, at which point he would have one year. At an FCS school, he can play immediately. Lee has a close relationship with Duke coach David Cutcliffe, but that appears highly unlikely. By ACC rules, an athlete on scholarship transferring from one member school to another cannot receive athletically related financial aid from the new school for one academic year.
My guess would be an FCS school closer to his home in Durham, N.C., like Richmond or James Madison.
Who’s going to play quarterback for Tech?
Justin Thomas, who played on a limited basis this season as a redshirt freshman, has the inside track. Thomas is quicker and faster than Lee, which gives him an edge running the option, but is smaller at 5-foot-11 and 179 pounds.
Backup Tim Byerly, redshirting freshman Ty Griffin and expected early enrollee Matthew Jordan will also compete in the spring.

Great news. I hope he is there for another 20 years.

If they weren't still paying Hewitt he would probably be fired.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I doubt few if any HS teams run the option. It baffles me that some of these guys want to play as a QB in an option type team. Surely they can't expect to play QB at the next level. I don't get it, and I can't stand the option - would really suck to be a GA Tech fan.

Its still popular in HS, some run the Wing T version, not really the triple option...But nowadays the spread and pro offenses are becoming more popular.

They are paying Hewitt $7M not to coach, and Johnson's buyout is $8M.

Yes it would. :rotf:

Kiehl Frasier has indicated that he will likely transfer. He would be a good match for GT. He got caught up in a crappy situation with the Chizik turmoil, being forced to play drop-back passer in a pro-set, which he was not good at. But the kid can run, has size, and would be good in the option game. Problem is, he'd have to sit out a year at GT, and GT needs a QB now.

The option is still used in HS at the smaller schools for sure.

Johnson's problem is that he has the personality of an ogre and can't recruit. His only success at GT was with Gailey's players.

You must be a closet GT fan because you spend countless hours and start threads on the GT 247 site.

Yeah I'm sure someone does have the same name. It's very common Click Clack.

He was the Yech QB who Brantley planted the crown of his helmet into his chin. One of the worst hits I have seen. Gast recruited my son when he coached at James Madison.

This kid spends more time on the internet than any person on the planet. He thought our ECDawg was the guy from the Leather Helmet Blog as well. He thinks Optik posts somewhere else that he does not too. He needs a junior detective badge for schizo's. Sad, sad kid that one.

I hope this hurts the nerds as much as I think it will. That makes me smile just thinking about it.
