Should have been done several years ago for App State.

I am in agreement with this move. Both schools have played very well in the FCS, and it's about time they move to the next level.

I think fans forget the top-tier FCS schools can give the lesser FBS programs a run for their money, if not beat them. The UM/App. State game is an example as pointed out above. Now they'll get their chance at the FBS level. Starting in the Sun-Belt isn't a bad way to enter the FBS. Both of these programs will be able to compete against WKU, Troy, Arkansas State, all of which IMO are no slouches. From this competitive environment, I wouldn't be surprised to see App. State and/or Georgia Southern move to another more competitive conference in 5-10 years.

Storm was the very first person who came to mind when I saw this thread...Couldn't pass the opportunity by. Guess I'll have to take my lumps...

well, they sent us back home because the baby is breech, so at this point, we're just waiting it out hoping he'll turn. So I guess all is forgiven.

on the plus side, Michigan's strength of schedule will improve in 2014 when the play App State again.

As a fan and alumni of a school that made this jump, don't freaking do it.

NLU (now ULM) went form being a dominant program competing for national titles, with sold out games and a ton of natural rivals, to being a rent a win. They are having a modicum of success now, by there standards, but the price is not worth it.

I respect your opinion as you make a great point. Since making the transition from (then) D-1AA to D-1A, ULM has only had ONE winning season - in 2012-2013. It takes a lot to be successful at the FCS level, but it takes even more to be great in the FBS. I think more programs than not that make the transition (1-AA to 1-A; FCS to FBS) do not end up successful long-term. Of course there are exceptions like Boise State.

Georgia Southern has been better than App State. Y'all just remember the Michigan game.

I respect Georgia So. It seems like they make it to the FCS quarters or semifinals every year.

Erk Russell started the program in 1982. He won 4 NCs between 1984 and 1989, and lost the other one in the NC game to Furman. He retired after the 1989 season, but they won the NC again in 1990. They lost in the semifinal game in 2010, 2011, and 2012.
App State's record doesn't compare.

+1

Is there anything that you like about the move from FCS to FBS? Do you believe the move will aid Georgia Southern's recruiting?
