I dont know. I think he is good but not sold on top 5. Was he top 5 before he got the Kansas brand to sell? Not close IMO.

At Kansas he is worth that money for sure. They'll pay anything for a winning basketball program. Roy never won a NC there...I wonder how Self's contract compares to Roy's now that he's at N. Carolina? Bill's making what SEC football coaches are making/year. It's that important to Kansas basketball. Personally, I don't think Self is a top-5 coach. Someone coaching a team like KU shouldn't lose to N. Iowa in the NCAA tourney. But, he's certainly a top-10 coach, and if you look at the preseason top-25 basketball programs half of them have pathetic football programs. A guy like that can command that kind of money especially with a NC in his back pocket.

No doubt Self lost some games he shouldn't have- but- he has redeemed himself...

Self ahead of Roy, Boeheim, et al is interesting. I respect your opinion XPS.

Yes, Self is worth $52 Mil because Kansas is willing to pay him that much.

People overpay all the time. Doesn't mean ROI warrants it.

Boeheim is one of the most overrated coaches of all-time- Roy would have made my list 2 years ago....

Is anybody that coaches a game where you bounce a ball for a living worth $53.32 million? What about the people in uniform. To me, that's not even really a fair question toward Self, because none of them deserve it. However, let's face it, they are in a multi-million dollar business, and Self is obviously one of the best. You can question if he's top 5 if you want, but he was top 2 last year when it counted, and #1 in 2008. Thus, my answer, no he's not worth that money, Cal isn't either, but if you're going to give it to a coach, Self would be among the best to get it.

To me, the actual bigger deal here is this deal will put Self at Kansas for 19 or 20 seasons, which if he does what he's done the first 9 years there, he'd be right there with Phog Allen (imagine that as the best coach in KU history, past Roy Williams, Owens, Larry Brown, Naismith). What a group of names.

That is a crap load of money but if he can win two national titles or so then I would say it was worth it.

Considering he was already making $3.3M a year, a "modest" increase of $500K for a title game appearance seems tame.

A "modest" increase of 15%. I'd love to have that kind of raise.

Obviously I am in the wrong profession :rotf:

Well, Mark Gottfried went from 1.2 mil to 1.95 and for what? A Sweet 16 surprise when they backed in to the NCAAT. Comparing Self to that it is modest lol.

You are worth what someone is willing to pay you.

What a way to simplify it. That's not always fair as some people should be paid more imo.

Welcome to life. Teachers SHOULD be paid more. They are not. Again, you are worth what someone is willing to pay you.

Agreed, joe. To me everybody in the SEC would take his success since 2000, even getting Tulsa to an Elite 8. Hed be maybe the best coach in this league, at worse second behind Cal imo in terms of consistently getting to the second weekend.
