Interesting analysis for next year so I thought I would share it. It's only for the West though.


Doing some numbers-crunching research for a story in tomorrow's Clarion-Ledger that will, in a way, preview the Ole Miss-Mississippi State basketball game, but will also look ahead to the bright futures of these teams in 2009-10.



Assuming every player with eligibility remaining returns, consider what each team is returning:



In minutes:

Ole Miss, 99.2 percent

Mississippi State, 98.1

Arkansas, 96.4

Alabama, 71.0

Auburn, 61.1

LSU, 43.6



In points:

Ole Miss, 99.9

Mississippi State, 98.4

Arkansas, 97.5

Alabama, 68.0

Auburn, 62.8

LSU, 43.8



In rebounds:

Ole Miss, 99.9

Mississippi State, 98.2

Arkansas, 95.7

Alabama, 75.8

Auburn, 55.3

LSU, 44.3



So it's no surprise that ESPN analyst Jimmy Dykes told The Blog this moments ago: "I would say if you just go by returning experience, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Arkansas would be three teams in the West next year you'd at least have to pencil in in the top three right now."

I would say Ole Miss might be the favorite to win the West next year with us coming in a close second.

yea...Ole Miss is going to have one hell of a team....If the injury bug stays away and MSU/Ole Miss keep all their ppl....it's safe to say the State of Mississippi is going to be a force....how is Southern Miss supposed to be next year?

Arkansas won't be close to the top 3...this program is in meltdown mode and won't be turned around until the U of A gets serious and brings a big time coach in here.

& MSU if V & all the others come back ... id give the advantage to UM right now.

Varnado wouldn be on the edge of the 2nd round at this point - he'll be back.

I really like what Alabama brings back next year. We'll have 8 returners. All of those guys can play quality minutes. Then we're bringing in a 5 man recruiting class which has three players that should be able to contribute right away. We will have a deep and experienced bench.

1. I'm not being a homer. Your comment was there is no LOGICAL reason OM would be better than MSU.

2. Your point about MSU returning every legitimate contributor is fine. Ole Miss does the same.

3. In addition to returning all contributors, we are bringing back 2 HUGE contributors from last year. MSU does not.

4. MSU may be better than Ole Miss this year, but not by much. And if OM beats MSU today, I think we know for a fact OM is better. Just bc you hate OM doesn't make your argument valid.

Southern Misssssippi(projected next season)............


Southern Mississippi has a veteran team(including key players) returning.

They also have talented impact transfers(junior college and Southern Cal) and highschool talent coming in.

Also, they are working on other options.

I expect Ole Miss to be a contender next year when their PG returns. I think MSU will compete with them for the west.

As for Arkansas, I try to remain calm in the middle. Things are never as good or bad as you think they are. An offseason working together will do wonders for the Hogs IMO.
