whats everyone's take? The gamecocks need this win to keep the SEC hopes alive.....Vandy is a good team but hopefully being at home we'll pull it out. I think the gamecocks will win

Vanderbilt is a bit down this year from previous years. Carolina plays well at home and should win this game. I think it will be close. We need this win before we go to Rupp.

Vandy needs this to dig out of the hole we are in right now. USC needs this to protect home court.

USC 71 Vandy 62

we appear to be more than "a bit down". have had some classic games with USC in recent years.

I'm not giving Vandy much of a chance in this game, but that's usually the time upsets occur. The CLA will be rocking tho. That's for sure.

Almost 15k for Ole Miss...the CLA should be close to capacity hopefully for the Vandy game. Better watch their teeth.

"Better watch their teeth" - What does that mean, fodive?

After the fight that Corey Smith started with Renaldo Balkman back in 04, Stallings told Balkman and the rest of the team they better "watch their teeth" in the rematch (which we summarily won, in the midst of about 6 straight, too)...Oh the boards were fun after that one.

Isn't Vandy on a 5 or 6 game winning streak against USC?

I wouldn't be shocked. The last two years have been abysmal for us.

fodive, Balkman started the fight, Vandy's coaches stopped the fight with Balkman in a very vulnerable position, and USC did not go on a 5 or 6 game winning streak vs Vandy. Your memory doesn't seem too accurate.

I see pateac got a new screenname :raz:

2/16/01 W 66-43 SC
2/8/02 W 84-72 SC
3/1/02 W 76-64 SC
1/28/03 W 57-55 SC
2/14/03 W 82-75 SC
1/26/04 W 68-63 SC

There is 6 straight right there

We split the next two and then Vandy has won the last five.

exactly when do you think the fight took place?

govandy0620
01-25-2009, 08:51 PM
Dude, come on. The fight happened in the 2002-2003 season (the one we went to the Sweet 16 in). Every Vandy fan remembers because that was the only game we lost at home. USC had a layup at the buzzer to beat us in Nashville.

Don't make up stuff like that.

In fact, it was the 57-55 game that you listed yourself. It was in the middle of your winning streak over us.

Don't make up stuff like that.

What am I making up?

It was the 03-04 season. I never disputed that. Corey Smith started it and Stallings warned our team to watch their teeth. It was also in the midst of a 6 game win streak.

I thought things were pretty undisputed. Smith started the fight, Stallings told us to watch our teeth...during that time Carolina was in the midst of a 6 game win streak...I don't think I'm missing anything :)

The dates and scores posted were real and true and can be referenced if you so desire.

My bad. I missed the "in the midst of". I thought you meant that it started a 6 game winning streak.

govandy, we both interpreted the sentence the same way. but i see fodive's point. however, anyone who has inside info on the game knows Balkman started the fight, including Balkman. To their credit, Balkman played with two other Vandy players that summer on a foreign trip or something and they had a great time together and kept in touch, maybe still do.

alright enough with the teeth they are overrated anyway.....vandy comes in gettn wrecked by florida at home so im sure some fire will be under the asses...hopefully home court will boost us with the win...hopefully not another buzzer beater as time expires now that foster is gone

Yea balkman hit Smith in the face, that is what started the whole incident. I was at the game and remember very clearly. Balkman was a punk, ran his mouth and was always a chippy player. Him and Smith had been going at it all night, and Balkman hit SMith in the face, Smith then turned and tackled Balkman, getting on top of him and beating him down a little before Stallings pulled him off top of Balkman. In no way could Smith ever be seen as starting this, when Balkman hit him in the face first. Come on, even with SC blinders on you have to admit the truth if you actually ever saw what happened.

I expect a good game, but SC to win. Downey is going to kill us.

Come on man, we all saw who started the fight. It was clear that Smith just tackled Balkman for no reason. By the way, I hear Smith started a new career kicking puppies.

Yea I'm sure. Last I heard Smith was playing for the Harlem Globetrotters, but that was 3-4 years ago. I don;t think he is playing for them anymore.

This is a big swing game for us, with Kentucky upcoming on the weekend. We are more than likely going to have a sell-out or close to it and it is always interesting when we play Vandy. I would have rather Vandy not have gotten blown out of the water against UF but we'll have to see how it goes.

Hopefully we can pull it off.

I've met Corey Smith on a number of occasions while he was at Vandy and after he graduated. He is a very well spoken smart guy. Other than that one incident where he was punched by Balkman, I have never seen him lose his cool. And I don't know many people that could get punched in the face, and not retaliate.

JRS, your getting tackled by Corey could have happened. He was contacted by a minimum of 3 NFL teams (maybe 6 total) about playing pro football after his senior year at Vandy. Turned them down, went on to the Globetrotters and a distinguished pro career in Europe.

I don't know many career European basketball pros....name some few European Hall of Famers for me......

meanwhile, Vandy is being schooled at the game of defensive basketball, right now.....

USC: 24
Vandy: 13

9:16 first half....

USC leads at the half 42-30. We've amped up the defense in this game, already forcing Vandy into 15 turnovers through one half. Hopefully we can keep it up in the 2nd half....

Tre Kelly is enjoying a lucrative career over there. Or has he recently gotten promoted to the NBA? The 2nd best league in the world, behind the NBA, is the 1st league of Spain. Lots of SEC players all over the world's ppro ranks. Some last 1 year, some many years. Earn very good livings but yes, they do it very quietly. Keep low profiles.

Yeah I think Tre is in Italy or something. Carlos Powell also enjoyed a good career over there post-USC.

Ogilvy did not start. Ezelli did. Ogilvy has a injured heel, and the flu. He has been very ineffective for the past 2-3 games, no reason to think it was all SC.

Good game by the gamecocks. Went about how I figured. I guess ya'll were due after losing the past 5 to us.

I wasn't completely upset by the outcome. Other than the ludicrous amount of turnovers and fouls (49 FTA by USC???), I thought Taylor had his best game of his young career (23 and 7), Drake is a new man (18 pts), we continue to win the rebounding battles (that never happened in recent years), and we're finally starting to shoot a respectable percentage. And taking the lead in the 2nd half after being down 12 was a great sign.

I'm happy that Stallings has tweaked the gameplan because of AJ's ineffectiveness (due to injury). We were in full on "attack the rim" mode last night, which makes sense with our personnel.

Vandy is 1-5 in conference, but has played 5 of the best 6 teams in the league (UT, UK, UF, MSU, USC...LSU being the exception that we haven't played yet), and I think 7 SEC wins is still possible. An NIT birth for this young team would be a GOD-send going into next year where BIG things will be expected (losing no-one...adding Jenkins...freshmen another year of exp...and a HOPEFULLY healthy AJ).

Good win for the Gamecocks. Downey completely took over when Vandy took the lead in the 2nd half, as he should have.
