FYI. Unusual to see a college sports story in a business magazine, but there is a good seven page article on the Florida Gators in the current issue of Fortune magazine (10/29/07 Rupert Murdoch on cover) called "The Biggest Gators in the Swamp". It's mainly about the big Gator boosters and how much money Florida takes in ($85.5 million ranking #5 overall)

The article goes on to say the modern Florida era of football greatness began with Charlie Pell in 1979 and then Galen Hall.

I would post a link but couldn't find it on Fortune.com

Side note: The author, Brian O'Keefe, hails from the University of Alabama.

Ohio St. is reputed to have the largest AD budget in ncaa history. I'm just waiting for the day of college programs issuing IPOs and start selling shares to investors on the Dow Jones.

The thing I am most proud of is our AD is entirely privately funded. Unlike another major athletic department in the state, for instance, not only does UF's athletic department pay for itself entirely through private funds, but it also gives a contribution to the academic side on I believe an annual basis. Almost positive its an annual thing.
