COLUMBIA -- The University of South Carolina's first commitment in men's basketball for its 2008 recruiting class is from a 6-foot-8, 265-pound power forward who began his high school career as a guard.
Darius Morrow, whose commitment was confirmed Tuesday by his coach, averaged 12 points and 11 rebounds last year for Columbia High School in Decatur, Ga.
"Darius used to be a guard," coach Phil McCrary said. "When he came in as a ninth-grader, we were talking about putting him on the wing. But he kept getting bigger and stronger. So we said, 'Look, we may need to convert this kid to the post.' "
Last year Morrow, whom McCrary said is a "high B" student, played alongside 6-8, 270-pound Jeremy Price, who is now a freshman at the University of Georgia.

"They became the best of friends," McCrary said. "Now they look like they'll be going against each other."
McCrary said Morrow picked the Gamecocks over a number of schools, including Cincinnati, Oklahoma, Purdue, Penn State, Providence and LaSalle as well as the College of Charleston.
"He's a big, physical player. But he can actually shoot the ball. He can shoot 3s. Darius can also handle the ball for a big guy," McCrary said. "He's got a nice mid-range game.
"I always said he was always an SEC-type post player because of way SEC likes to bang bodies. He fits that mold very well."
