Power forward
Montgomery (AL) St. Jude
AAU: Alabama Challenge

This was expected once Andrew Steele committed as they wanted to play together in college. That gives Bama 3 commits from the Rivals Top 50.

That's the first time I've seen and heard that comment...............

Now if Bama had a real coach.........

This is indeed a great class for Bama, which is quite honestly par for the usual course. Gottfried has rarely had a recruiting problem.

That seems to be what happens more times than not.

Gottfried has done a good job. He takes more flack than he should.

I don't think anybody would ever say Gottfried has done a bad job... he's taken Bama to it's only Elite 8. But, my thinking is similar to what some UK fans were saying about Tubby: is Bama content to go to the Sweet 16 once every 5 years and win the SECW about every two or three years or do they want to elevate it even further. Perhaps getting Green will do that, but even Richard Hendrix came in with a better rep, and Bama has still not gotta into that elite uppercrust of teams.

CMG always has Bama on the verge of being an Elite team. There's no telling how good Bama could have been last year if Steele played like he did his sophmore year. CMG is keeps bringing in the talent. In any given year Bama could win or at least challenge for the SEC and/or make a deep run in the tournament.

I can't debate any of that because I agree. But, it's not a question of if Gottfried can "at least challenge for the SEC and/or make a deep run in the tourney" he's done both (won league in 2002 and got to the Elite 8 in 2004). But, to me, what separates a great coach (Coach K) from a good one (Mark Gottfired) is can he be elite each and every year. That's why I'm not all bonkers over Billy Donovan either honestly.

Gottfried has had a great run since 2001:
2001: NIT Finals
2002: SEC title, SECT finals
2003: #1 seed
2004: Elite 8
2005: NCAAT
2006: NCAAT
2007: NIT

The consistency just isn't there to me. I know he can win those things. Can he do it every year though.

How about a lineup next year of

PG: Pickett, Hollinger, Torrance
SG: Tubbs, Hillman, Steele
SF: Gee, Mitchell
PF: Hendrix, Jemison
PF/C: Green, Knox, Coleman

Justin Tubbs personally is my favorite player. I have a friend from his hometown of Trussville. Bama has talent for sure. I don't think with Gottfried they'll ever not be talented on the floor.

I don't think he's an elite coach. i just think he's a little underappreciated.

Well Andrew Skwara agrees with you about Gottfried being underrated.

As far as Gottfried, I would lean toward underrated. Gottfried isn't thought of as one of the SEC's top coaches, but he's turned Alabama into one of the league's top programs. The former UCLA assistant is a very good recruiter and while he may not be an X's and O's genius, he's more than capable of taking the Tide deep into the NCAA Tournament. In 2005-06, with just seven scholarship players, the Tide was a basket away from knocking off eventual runner-up UCLA in the second round.

Yeah, he had a nice thing there about Bama (and even Kentucky and Jamont Gordon). He covered some SEC territory there. But, as for the matter at hand, I think he was fair to Gottfried and Bama in his assessment.

Excellent recruiter, average floor coach. Im afraid with the loss of Asbury as an assistant might make Gottfried as even worse floor coach (I hope Im wrong)

I was shocked to see that Asbury had retired. It seems like coaches nowadays don't retire. IT seems like Pearson and Holland are above average assistants though, so that'll keep Bama afloat. Kobie Barker is the new guy.

I dont understand the hiring of Kobie Baker. Nothing against him personally. He just doesnt have any experience. He may turn into an excellent coach (I hope he does) I kinda think Gottfried hired him because he wont question Gottfried (I think Asbury had different ideas & I also think it helps to have different ideas instead of just agreeing on everything.)

I thought Baker was at North Texas or Louisiana-Monroe maybe last year as an assistant?

He was on the Bama staff as Director of Basketball Relations from May '06 thru May '07. You are right about him being an assistant at North Texas ('05-'06). He is actually from Northport, AL (just across the river from Tuscaloosa). He has a little more experience than I give him credit for. I kinda thought we might hire ex Mississippi State coach Richard Williams.

Thanks for the clarification. Richard Williams? That would be interesting. Do you think he'd be interested?

I heard that he would have been. He still lives in the Starkville area & doesnt want to move very far away. You dont get much closer to Starkville that Tuscaloosa (Div 1 jobs)

If you can keep Richard W from screwing your cheerleaders/pom squad he would make an excellent coach.

Well congrats Bama, but the ratings are out on the recruiting and MSU is the #1 recruiting class of 2008 in the SEC and #5 in the nation, right in front of Bama at #6...Wow the rivalry and competition is going to be huge! Can't wait!
