LAURINBURG, N.C. — A story first foretold in greek mythology, Zeus is returning to Athens.

Zamir White, the nation’s top-ranked running back in the 2018 class, verbally committed to the University of Georgia over Clemson, North Carolina, Ohio State and Alabama on Tuesday, doing so on his mother Shanee’s birthday.

Rated as the No. 6 overall prospect according to the 247Sports Composite, the five-star star ballcarrier, donning a black jacket and red flower.

"I'm done. I'm done, man. 100 percent," White said. "Lock and loaded. Georgia has been the leader for me since my freshman."

White said Georgia and Alabama were his top two before deciding Monday night.

"Playing time (was big)," White said.

One of the first schools to offer White as a prep freshman in 2014, North Carolina made a serious push this month but it was always Georgia at the top, a program that's been the constant during his recruitment. Early on, White appreciated comparisons to former Bulldogs star Todd Gurley from the Georgia staff but head coach Mark Richt's unexpected exit in 2015 caused Georgia to lose some of its traction as the leader.

White's relationship with Georgia assistant Dale McGee, who has made White his top priority, was crucial throughout the process.

"I think Zamir really enjoyed the recruiting hoopla at first, but as time has neared for his commitment, it has worn him down a little," said Scotland High offensive coordinator Keith Wood, the point man for Tuesday's ceremony with head coach Richard Bailey out of state.

The 6-foot, 205-pound backfield star who averages 8.6 yards per carry career in one of North Carolina’s most competitive 4A conferences plans to enroll in the spring and challenge for immediate playing time as the heir apparent to current senior running backs Nick Chubb and Sony Michel.

With the strength of an entire small-town community behind him, White will do everything in his power to join the storied history of stellar running backs before him at Georgia, many of whom also North Carolina natives.

"“Zamir always works as if he has a chip on his shoulder despite already being at the top,” Scotland High running backs coach Lonnie Cox said. “He comes to practice in the morning and then he comes back at night for footwork drills. He always wants to get better. I think that's a product of his hard-working mentality.”

Ours isn't exactly chopped liver, it's just got 2 seniors that Bama doesn't have (although Bama's kids will likely turn pro early).

I'd like to believe he chose UGA because we've been there since the beginning. We were the third offer he got as a 9th grader.

Well Bo is likely gone after this year while just being a junior, but D. Harris will likely return, Josh Jacobs will be a sophomore, and then it's BJ Edmunds, last year's either #1-2 RB in N. Harris and Brian Robinson. So there's a definite logjam at RB for Bama, but kids know that the best RB plays regardless of class. But I feel like he was UGA all the way anyway.

Great pick up at UGA. I'm anxious to see how he develops. Possibly the next superstar at UGA.
