Charles Matthews will transfer from Kentucky and will be granted a full release with no restrictions, UK announced on Wednesday.

“The hardest thing as a coach is to lose a player that you really want to coach,” head coach John Calipari said in a release. “In Charles’ case, I believe he is going to be a productive college player who has the ability to play at the next level. I know Charles’ best basketball is ahead of him, and while I’m a saddened to see him go, I support his decision and will help in any way I can.

“It hasn’t happened very often in my career, but transferring is a part of our game. It doesn’t change who we are as a program. We will support every kid in whatever way we can to make sure they can pursue their dreams, because ultimately that’s all I want for these young men.”

The rising sophomore averaged 1.7 points and appeared in all 36 games of the 2015-16 season, averaging 10.3 minutes per game. The 6-6, 189-pound small forward underwent a minor hip procedure after the season. In the release, Matthews expressed appreciation for his time in Lexington.

“I want to thank the coaches, my teammates and the Big Blue Nation for all of their support this season,” Matthews said. “I gained great experience during my freshman year at Kentucky. This was a difficult decision for me, but at the end of the day I felt like it was in my best interest to explore other options. I appreciate the support Coach Cal has given me in making this decision and the commitment the coaching staff made to me for this past season and beyond. Kentucky will always hold a special place in my heart.”

In his postseason press conference, Calipari said Matthews was probably three to four weeks away from being back to full strength. Calipari also said he wanted to see more development in Matthews' offensive arsenal over the offseason.

"I want to see Charles Matthews be able to say, ‘I can knock down shots, I can spread the court,’" Calipari said. "Because you know athletically how bouncy he is and all those things. Now give us the offense, show us. I’m anxious to see that."

Hate to hear this because he brought a lot of energy off the bench and seemed to be a very good kid. He was a fighter in the games and could grab boards when no one else would.
However, at least this year, his minutes are going to be limited because of the talent coming in. Most likely that's the case every year.

I wish him nothing but the best of luck.

I try to post news on every school. It wasn't an attempt to denigrate UK.

I was joking.

I hate Charles has left. That gives us not 6'5, 6'6, or 6'7 guys who can be difficult match-up problems. I hope he finds a great situation.

Isn't Malik 6-6? He is a match up problem for most.

No Malik is 6'3, which makes some question his NBA viability as somewhat of a tweener.

Heard he was looking at Michigan.....

He is. Doesn't seem like a fit. He is not a shooter like Beilein usually has.

officially transferring to Michigan. seems like a legit defender. something UM sorely needs. has to sit a year though.

Good for you guys. I hope Matthews finishes what will be a great college career well at Michigan. I appreciate him a lot. Wouldn't be the first UK to Michigan move, I've heard of. (What about you Storm?)

He's going to be the kind of athlete that Beilein typically can't recruit out of high school, so that will be a welcome talent infusion from that standpoint. There's nobody better to work on his deficient shot than Beilein either. Seems like a great decision, plus he's closer to home!

That seems to be the general consensus that Beilein will work on his shot. Just having a possible elite defender is huge. Sucks he has to sit a year though. As much as I enjoy football, there's always an energy about bball I love too. Last year was a big disappointment. I hope UM can improve. They have some solid recruits coming in.
